Why India jet lag hits harder than you expect
Your body clock runs on light and food. India runs on a single fixed offset: UTC+5:30. No daylight saving. Ever.
That half-hour stub is unusual, but the real trap is the moving gap. When your home country shifts clocks and India stays still, the distance between you changes. London in January: 5.5 hours behind. London in July: 4.5 hours behind. Same flight. Different gap. Memorise one number for your route and you will mis-time your first meal, your sunlight exposure, and your sleep window by a full hour for half the year.
Direction matters more than distance. Flying west to east, toward India, shortens your day. Your body can handle that. Flying east to west, leaving India, lengthens it. That is harder. Plan the return before you book the outbound.
What is the time difference between India and New York?
The US sits far enough west that you cross the date line in effect. You leave in the evening and land two calendar days later, in the deep Indian night.
New York is 10.5 hours behind IST in January. In July, 9.5 hours behind. An evening departure from JFK touches down in Delhi around 01:00 to 02:00 IST. That is 15:30 New York time. Your body expects afternoon light. It gets darkness.
Los Angeles is 13.5 hours behind IST in January, 12.5 hours behind in July. A late departure from LAX lands in Delhi around 04:00 to 05:00 IST. That is 14:30 Los Angeles time. You step into an Indian dawn while your body screams mid-afternoon.
Chicago is 11.5 hours behind IST in January, 10.5 hours behind in July.
What goes wrong: The standard advice is "sleep on the plane." Dangerous. Most US to India flights land in the Indian night or very early dawn. Sleep through the flight and you arrive fully rested at 02:00 IST. You will not fall asleep again. You lie awake until first light, crash at 10:00, and wake disoriented at 16:00. Day one is gone.
What to do instead: Stay awake for the last four to five hours of the flight. Watch films. Walk the aisles. Land tired. If you arrive at 02:00 IST, you want to be exhausted enough to sleep straight through until 08:00 or 09:00. Then force yourself to stay awake until 21:00 that evening. One hard day resets you.
What is the time difference between India and London?
Shorter flights. Smaller gaps. Faster reset.
London is 5.5 hours behind IST in winter and 4.5 hours behind in summer. A late-afternoon departure from Heathrow lands in Delhi around 03:00 to 04:00 IST. That is 21:30 London time. You land in the middle of the Indian night.
Paris is 4.5 hours behind IST in winter and 3.5 hours behind in summer. A similar departure window puts you into Delhi around 02:00 to 03:00 IST.
What goes wrong: European flights last 8 to 9 hours. You do not get the deep sleep of a 14-hour haul. Many travelers arrive groggy but not exhausted, then cannot sleep at the hotel. They lie awake from 04:00 until noon.
What to do instead: Eat the last meal on the plane two hours before landing. Refuse the pre-arrival breakfast if it appears 90 minutes before touchdown. Your body needs to eat on Indian time, not on European time. Land hungry. Eat a proper breakfast at 07:00 or 08:00 IST, even if you are not hungry. That meal tells your liver: we are in India now.
What is the time difference between India and Singapore?
Traveling east to India means you gain hours. A shorter day. Easier on most bodies.
Singapore is 2.5 hours ahead of IST. A departure from Singapore at 08:00 SGT lands in Delhi around 10:30 IST. You lose only 2.5 hours. Jet lag is mild.
Tokyo is 3.5 hours ahead of IST. A late-morning departure arrives in Delhi around 15:30 IST. You lose 3.5 hours.
Sydney is 5.5 hours ahead of IST in January and 4.5 hours ahead in July. A departure from Sydney at 09:00 AEDT arrives in Delhi around 14:30 IST. You lose 5.5 hours.
What goes wrong: The mild gap lulls people into ignoring preparation. They land, feel fine, go about their day, then hit a wall at 18:00 IST because their body thinks it is 23:30 Sydney time.
What to do: On the flight, shift your watch to IST immediately. Eat and sleep on IST schedule from the moment you board. If the plane serves dinner at what would be 03:00 IST, skip it. Drink water. Arrive and stay active until 21:00 IST, then sleep.
What is the time difference between India and Dubai?
Dubai is 1.5 hours behind IST. Year-round. A three-hour flight. You barely notice the difference.
A departure from Dubai at 09:00 GST arrives in Delhi at 13:30 IST. You lose 1.5 hours.
What goes wrong: Nothing serious. Some travelers feel sluggish on day one because they woke up earlier than usual. That is not jet lag. That is a short night.
What to do: Nothing special. Arrive, eat lunch, go about your day. You will adjust by the next morning without effort.
When do flights actually land in India?
Most international flights arrive in two windows.
Late evening (22:00 to 00:30 IST): Common for flights from Europe and the Gulf. You land, clear customs, and reach your hotel around 01:00. Your body is still on home time.
Early morning (01:00 to 05:30 IST): Common for flights from the US, Canada, and some Asia-Pacific routes. You land in darkness and need to function for the rest of the day.
The early-morning arrival is harder. Your hotel room will not let you check in until late morning in many cases. Plan for it: book the room for the night before so it is ready when you arrive.
Beat India jet lag in one hard day
These steps work for any origin. Do them in order.
1. Set your watch to IST before boarding. Do not look at home time again. The mental game matters more than the physical one.
2. Hydrate on the plane. Cabin humidity sits below 20%. Dehydration makes jet lag worse. Drink water consistently. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for the last four hours.
3. Match your sleep to the arrival window. If you land at 02:00 IST, sleep from 02:30 to 08:00. If you land at 05:30 IST, do not sleep on the plane. Land and stay awake until 21:00 IST. That first day will hurt. It works.
4. Get sunlight in your eyes by 08:00 IST. Sunlight is the strongest time cue. In New Delhi, the sun rises at 05:23 on the June solstice. On the December solstice it rises at 07:09. Even in winter, get outside by 08:00. Stand in the sun for 15 minutes. Do not wear sunglasses. Do not look at the sun directly.
5. Eat meals at Indian meal times. Breakfast 07:30 to 09:00. Lunch 12:30 to 14:00. Dinner 19:30 to 22:00. Your digestive system is a clock. Feed it on Indian time.
6. Skip the afternoon nap on day one. You will want one at 15:00. Do not take it. You will sleep poorly that night and prolong the adjustment. If you must rest, do a 20-minute power nap before 14:00, no later.
Managing the return trip: India to the West
Westbound travel lengthens your day. That is harder than shortening it.
India to New York: You gain 10.5 hours in January, 9.5 in July. A 02:00 IST departure arrives at 08:30 EST. You have been awake since 02:00 your time. Your body thinks it is 08:30 New York time, but you have already lived half a day.
What to do: Sleep as much as possible on the flight. Take melatonin if you use it. When you land, do not go to bed immediately. Stay awake until at least 21:00 local time. If you arrive at 08:00 and sleep at 15:00, you will be awake at 23:00 and ruin your first two days.
India to London: You gain 4.5 to 5.5 hours. A 03:00 IST departure arrives at 07:30 GMT. Same problem, shorter gap. Stay awake until 21:00 London time. Do not nap.
